Daily Study Today I played one blitz game, I looked over a game played by Kasparov and Karpov from Linares 1992. I also worked on a chess newsletter. More information about that newsletter to come!

The U.S Chess Championship ended in a tie for first place after Fabiano Caruana drew with Sam Shankland in an incredibly exciting game.

That means playoffs! Wesley So, Fabiano Caruana and Samuel Sevian will battle it out. More great chess!

Daily Study Today I played 5 blitz games and annotated two of them. I also annotated a Caro-Kann game played by Yasser Seirawan to help deepen my understanding of the opening. I want to look at more games played by top chess players in order to learn from the best.

Daily Study Today I spent some time on Lichess playing a few blitz games. I hadn’t played on the site for a while and just wanted to see if anything had changed since I last played on it. I also wanted to check out the “study” feature. I don’t like how the ratings on Lichess are higher than on chess.com. It would be nice if they lined up more closely. My current Lichess rating is 2003.

I am up to round ten in the U.S Chess Championships (yes a few days behind… don’t tell me who wins). The women’s champion was crowned in the tenth round. Carissa Yip is this years champion. I really enjoyed watching her games. Below is her tenth round win to secure first place in the tournament.

Daily Study Today I played 1 blitz game and did a little bit of opening training on Chessable. The blitz game below is in the French Defense. I have been playing a line where I give up a pawn for the initiative and it has been a lot of fun to play. It seems that it may be a fairly sound response also (Carissa Yip played the line twice in the U.S. Women’s Chess Championships). I still know very little about the opening and need to work out what to do when black doesn’t accept the pawn. This game taught me a valuable lesson on how to handle 10… d4 with the main idea of maintaining a pin to avoid losing material, while keeping an edge in the position.
