Game Today we have a game from the current U.S Chess Championships. Fabiano Caruana gets a nice win over John Burke with an excellent Ruy Lopez. It was a sharp line with 8. Bg5 and then h6 and g5 kicking the white bishop away. This opens up the kingside though and creates holes in black’s position. I found this to be an interesting way of playing the opening and something for me to look into a little more as an option in my games (usually I don’t play Bg5).

Today I played a stack of blitz games. It was fun, but the learning wasn’t great and I lost rating points. This trend keeps popping up. When I play lots of games I tend to do worse and fall into bad habits. Having the self control to only play a few games can be challenging, but I think it is more beneficial. When I only play a few games I can think back on the games and reflect on them. I remember the positions I had and can identify what worked and what could be improved. When I play an abundance of games I can’t remember any of them and unless I take the time to analyse a game I won’t be learning as effectively from my mistakes.

Game Today’s game is from the U.S. Championships. Daniel Naroditsky got a great win over Jeffery Xiong. The middle game complications were very exciting and the calculation needed by both players would have been so tricky in a game like this.

Game Today I decided to play just one blitz game again. The game is an advance Caro-Kann. I am still learning this opening and ideas and I feel like this game really helped to clarify a few ideas for me.
