Traxler Counter Gambit

Blitz Games

Here are some more Blitz games for you!

These two games are both games where I score wins with the Traxler Counter Gambit. I have done a few posts on the Traxler Counter Gambit and find it a really fun one to use in Blitz as it can often catch people by surprise. It is clearly just a Blitz opening though as it is very aggressive and with correct play white can avoid the attacks and steer the game into different variations that are more favourable.
The following games both show one of the key ideas in the Traxler Counter Gambit being the push of the d5 pawn on the 7th move. A while back I was researching the opening and this was one of the key ideas to maintain the attack and was present in most of the winning games I studied. The move opens the lines for the light squared Bishop as well as setting a simple trap. If 8.Bxd5 then 8…Bg4 wins the Queen so therefore 8.exd5 is the best move for white.

Blitz Game

Here is another Traxler Counter Gambit game I played in a 3 minute blitz tournament on Chesscube.
The game was quickly won after White entered into the 6.Kxf2 variation of the Traxler and then proceeded with 8.Nxh8 allowing Black to attack with the option of numerous different mating combinations.  I have included a few different mating lines to show some possible continuations.

Blitz Game

In this Blitz game I successfully used the Traxler Counter Gambit to gain the win. Last time I posted about this opening I had used it unsuccessfully as my knowledge of the possible continuations was limited.  After studying the lines in more detail I have managed this nice win over a 2000 rated player on Chesscube.

Local Club

Last week I visited my local chess club. It was good to catch up with a few people I had not seen in a while and to play a few games with actual pieces! I won my first game playing white against the Scandinavian defence. I lost my second game playing the Ruy Lopez with the white pieces. This brings us to my third and final game. I was ready to play something a little different so as black I opened with kings pawn against the Italian game and continued into the Traxler Counter Gambit. Now my knowledge of this opening is still growing and I struggled to find the right moves! I went on to play less then perfect moves that made my position quite unflattering.

This next game is an example of a winning attack in the Traxler Counter Gambit that I found on chessgames.com The game was played in 1955. Blacks two strong Bishops create a bind on the 6th rank, trapping in Whites King.
